This could be a post about the long-standing rivalry between the Apoel and Omonia football teams (both based in Nicosia) … but it’s not.
It’s about the yellow and green colors that dominate the outdoor scenery of the island between January and April every year. This is when Cyprus wears its best costume (the more rains we receive, the better the costume), which rightfully excuses the title of the “Golden-Green Leaf” (original title: “Χρυσοπράσινο Φύλλο” – Hrisoprásino Fíllo”) song dedicated to the island.
Uncultivated fields full of yellow-colored, White Mustard (Sinapis alba) plants and/or yellow daisies spread across the horizon, particularly in the fertile Mesaoria plains between the Troodos and Pentadaktylos mountain ranges. Add to these the countless lemon trees full of fresh, juicy lemons and you have a yellow-green extravaganza!
The song I am referring to, written in 1964 by Leonidas Malenis, composed by Mikis Theodorakis and performed first by Grigoris Mpithikotsis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj8pJPVun3A), speaks of the beauty of the island and its people…
